Liloan creates agency to focus on women, kids

-

CEBU, Philippines - To strengthen its programs on women and children, the Municipal Council of Liloan is creating the Commission for the Welfare of Women, Children and Family.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, through her daughter lawyer Cristina Garcia-Codilla, has donated P100,000 for the operation of the commission. The amount was received by Vice Mayor Thelma Jordan.

Jordan and Councilor Edna Cala sponsored the ordinance for the establishment of the commission, which was already passed on first reading at the council.

According to the proponents, the commission will implement programs against child and domestic abuse as well as trafficking of women. It will also “ensure that the rights of women and the belief in their worth and dignity as human beings are fully recognized and upheld.”

Liloan Mayor Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco, who will be the chairperson of the commission, said the commission will act as the government agency for protection, welfare and development in the town.

Frasco said the commission would be composed of heads of various departments and non-government agencies.

Its ultimate mission is to ensure protection of children, women and family against all forms of abuse and exploitation, to defend children’s rights, promote their welfare and development, and secure that they are given priority attention at all levels both by government and civil society.

Frasco said a budget of P100,000 will be set aside for the operation of the commission, which could also hold activities to generate funds for its own use and accept donation whenever legally possible. — Garry B. Lao/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
