DepEd bars selling of spiders near schools

-

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Education will be issuing a memorandum asking school officials and police to closely monitor vendors who could be selling spiders outside schools for gambling.

DepEd-7 director Recaredo Borgonia said that students are very fond of spider fighting that this could have bad effects to them.

“If we encourage or allow our children to buy these spiders then we are allowing them to gamble,” Borgonia said.

According to Borgonia, students buying spiders will mean that they are shelling out money that is supposedly intended for their food.

There had already been a memorandum on the matter issued before but Borgonia said that he would be issuing another memorandum so the selling of spiders near schools would be totally eliminated.

Meanwhile, as March is fast approaching, Borgonia is reminding all public schools to observe fewer expenses during graduation ceremonies.

Borgonia said that schools and parents should decide whether to use toga for the graduation rites since the rent is expensive. He said that students are not required to wear toga and that the school uniform would already do.

Borgonia added that he is also discouraging the making of yearbooks since it would only mean more expenses for the parents.

Schools are also not allowed to hold any records of the students because of any unpaid bills. They are only allowed to withhold records if the student failed to pass all academic requirements, Borgonia said. — AJ de la Torre/LPM   (THE FREEMAN)
