Disabled in Liloan told to register to get aid

-

CEBU, Philippines - Residents of Liloan who have physical disabilities are encouraged to register at the town hall so they can avail of various privileges from the government.

In his recent visit to sitio Tabuk, Barangay Lamac, Liloan Mayor Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco informed those present that his administration is making sure that people with handicaps can avail of assistance.

This after the municipal government created last year the Office of Persons with Disability Affairs through the passage of Ordinance 2009-1.

The persons with disabilities can register with the office and apply for an identification card, which will entitle them to certain privileges offered by the government. Aside from filling up an application form, the applicant must also submit two pictures.

Privileges include discounts during purchase of medicines and when riding public utility jeepneys.

Social welfare assistant Arceña Aseo said that all applicants should come to the office of the mayor or the social welfare office for instructions.

Meanwhile, the Liloan police station was awarded as having the Best Women and Children’s Desk in the rural division by the Police Regional Office-7 last February 10 during the 18th anniversary celebration of Philippine National Police at the Camp Sergio Osmeña in Cebu City. The Tagbilaran Police Station received the same award in the urban category.

“In behalf of the station I am thankful for the support,” said Liloan Police chief Ramon Ortiz, adding that they would not have achieved the award without the support of their mayor, the Department of Social Welfare Development and the Department of Interior and Local Government.

Ortiz also received commendation in September last year for the arrest of six armed robbers who victimized a local gasoline station. — Garry B. Lao/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
