CEBU – At least 10 public high schools in Cebu City will be upgraded through a joint project that will be implemented by the Cebu City government and the Aboitiz Group Foundation Incorporated that is expected to benefit thousands of students.
In the proposed memorandum of agreement that is to be signed by acting mayor Michael Rama and the officials of AGFI, it was stated that the foundation will spend P2,399,148 while the city will give a counterpart of P1,028,206 to be used to provide the schools’ science laboratories with the necessary equipment.
The city council has already referred the matter to the Committee on Laws headed by councilor Edgardo Labella for further study and see to it that it will not be disadvantageous to the city.
AGFI project officer Alex Lauron explained that the proposal to provide the 10 public schools of some science laboratory equipment, aside from repainting of the laboratory rooms, will amount to P3,427,355, the reason why they will ask for a counterpart from the city.
Lauron said the Board of Directors of AGFI have decided to help the public high schools in the city after they learned that the performance of the students in the recent and post achievement examinations in science has been less than satisfactory.
One of the reasons for the poor achievement is the lack of opportunity for the students to actualize science concepts through hands-on activities like laboratory experiments due to lack of science laboratory facilities.
The beneficiary schools that were identified by AGFI are Apas National High School, Pit-os National High School, Ramon Duterte Memorial High School, Don Vicente Rama Memorial National High School, Talamban National High School, Bulacao National High School.
Pardo National High School, Tisa National High School, Babag Integrated School and Busay National High School are also included in the list. — Rene U. Borromeo/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
