Mass wedding set at Cebu City Jail

CEBU - In celebration of the love month, a mass wedding will be held for the inmates of the Cebu City Jail this Sunday.

City jail warden Supt. Efren Nemeño said that 15 couples will be wed at the jail in a Mass to be celebrated by Bishop Leopoldo Tumulak who is based in Camp Crame.

Acting Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, councilor Augustus Pe Jr., and Association of Barangay Captain head councilor Eugenio Faelnar will be among the major sponsors.

Nemeño said many inmates wished to be married this Sunday but only 15 complied with all the requirements mandated by both the Civil Registry and the Catholic Church.

The inmates and their spouses underwent a marriage seminar conducted by the City Registry Office and also the Pre Cana seminar.

“Many inmates here wish to be married legally and with a priest, so this is the opportunity,” Nemeño said.

The costs of the wedding as well as the reception will be shouldered by the City Jail Cooperative.

Nemeño said if all goes as planned and there will be support from other sources, the program is hoped to be done in a regular basis.

The affair is also part of the moral upliftment of the more than 1,000 inmates of the city jail. —Ferliza C. Contratista with Elly Bolonos of Banat News/BRP   (THE FREEMAN)
