Drug suspect's mom charged for bribe try

Cebu - A 54-year-old woman has been charged with corruption of public officials yesterday after allegedly attempting to bribe an agent of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency to drop the case against her son who was arrested last January 20 for drugs.

PO3 George Cansancio of PDEA has filed charges against Ma. Luisa Años after she reportedly approached him in the office and tried to offer him an amount in exchange for dropping the charges filed against her son Alfonso for violating Section 5 and Section 11 of Article II of Republic Act 9165 or possession of illegal drugs.

“Pila? Para dili ipadayon ang kaso. Mo-offer ko og kwarta,” Cansancio quoted Años as saying after she approached him.

Cansancio said that Años asked him to drop the case in exchange of the amount that she will give. Instead of filing Sections 5 and 11 against his son, Años asked Cansancio to file only Section 12 of Art 2 of RA 9165, or possession of illegal drug paraphernalia, so that they can post bail.

No amount was ever mentioned but Cansancio said he has two witnesses who heard Años make the offer.

Alfonso was arrested by PDEA in a buy-bust operation last January 20 in sitio Antonio, barangay Jagobiao, Mandaue City. He is now detained at the PDEA-7 office. — Jasmin R. Uy/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
