Liloan sets aside P1 million for college scholarship

CEBU - The Liloan Municipal Council has allocated P1 million to support the college education of underprivileged but deserving students of the town.   

The ordinance approved by the council says money will be taken from the town’s annual collegiate educational trust fund.

Mayor Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco said recipients of the financial aid will be identified by council’s committees on education and finance, the local school board, and the mayor’s office itself.

Applicants will be identified based on their financial need, academic competence and result of their interview.

Frasco said high school valedictorians will granted P20,000 for tuition fee and P2,000 for book allowance and may enrol in a college of university recommended by the municipality.

Those who graduated salutatorian in high school will be granted P15,000 for tuition fee and P1,000 as book allowance while those who graduate as honourable mentions will be granted P10,000 financial assistance but may have to fight for 20 available slots through a qualifying exam.

Those interested to avail themselves of the scholarship will have to submit to the municipal hall a copy of his or her report card, letter request addressed to the mayor, certificate of good moral character, a residence from the barangay captain, and certificate from the school that he or she graduated with honors or belongs to the top 10 percent of the class.

Most importantly, the applicant must be able to show that his or her parents’ annual income must be below P60,000.

Aside from maintaining a grade requirement, scholars may also be asked to render service during summer break at any department of the municipality. — Garry B. Lao/JMO   (THE FREEMAN)
