Stricter rules on dancesport attire applied after blunder in Tuburan

-

CEBU - Experts on dancesport in Cebu agree with Governor Gwendolyn Garcia that clear cut guidelines on the attire of dancers must be put in place so as not to confuse participants, especially children who have become enticed to the popular sport.

Edward Hayco, founder of Dance Sport Team Cebu City, said they are now stricter on the propriety of the dancers’ attire following the incident in Tuburan town wherein a dance sport performance by students in “scanty” costume had affronted the governor.

The incident had forced Garcia to scrap the dance sport competition from the lineup of events for the upcoming provincial meet.

Apologizing to the governor, Hayco said, “sakto ka governor. Maybe some of these people saw it and copied it in the wrong way. I am sorry.”

Hayco admitted that he himself was shocked upon learning about the incident. Garcia, however, said the apology is not necessary, as Hayco had nothing to do with the incident in Tuburan.

Hayco’s wife and team co-founder, Eleanor, said the inputs they have provided the teachers, specifically on the attire, were not followed during the performance. The incident in Tuburan, she said, was a result of the teachers’ absence from the workshops they have conducted there.

“Ang among gi-input sa teachers wala sunda, nag expermento sila. Amo silang ipatawag, kasagaran dili manunga. Ambot og ila bang gibasa ang mga pamphlets nga among ipanghatag nila,” Eleanor said.

Hayco promised the team will work harder in educating the teachers about dancesport.

Dance Sport Team Cebu City has been teaching dancesport to children and young adults, especially the out-of-school youth, in different barangays in the city and various towns in the province to keep them away from the influence of drugs.

Since its creation a few years ago, Dance Sport Team Cebu City has gained a commendable reputation for the sport after winning medals here in the Philippines and abroad. The team also represented the Philippines in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games. — Garry B. Lao/JMO (FREEMAN NEWS)
