"Amazona" in Carmen detachment attack falls

CEBU - A joint team of police and military agents arrested a suspected member of the New People’s Army who is allegedly one of those who raided a military detachment in barangay Caurasan, Carmen in 2002 killing four soldiers.

Senior Supt. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, regional director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-7, said that his men arrested Dorothy Paraiso inside the D’scribe Transcription Office that she reportedly manages located on the second floor of a building along P. del Rosario Street, this city.

The CIDG agents, in coordination with the intelligence operatives of the Central Command, nabbed the 44-year-old Paraiso by virtue of a warrant of arrest issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Sylva Aguirre Paderanga for multiple counts of murder upgraded to rebellion by another judge.

Eleazar said that the accused was turned over to the Danao City-based RTC Branch 25 presided over by Judge Edito Enemicio.

Paraiso will be detained pending the resolution of her case after the court barred her from putting up a bail bond.

Chief Inspector Rogarth Campo and some military agents were quick to respond to a report on Paraiso’s presence in the city.

Military authorities claimed that Paraiso was one of those NPA rebels who raided a military detachment located in a barangay hall in sitio Siotes, barangay Caurasan, Carmen on December 12, 2002.

Killed during the rebel attack were Sgts. Buenaventura Hora and Eduardo Mandal; and Pfcs. Eugenio Quemado and Romy Landrillono, while Pfc. Adriano Gonzales survived the attack.

The military agents gathered information that Paraiso and a certain “Noy” were the ones who conducted surveillance in the area two days before the attack to determine strength and capabilities of the soldiers, as well as the terrain to ensure the success of the attack.

Co-accused Jiggy Geverola alias “Porto” is already detained at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center for multiple charges.

Geverola was arrested by the lawmen in Argao last May 2004 together with Ronald Sendrijas. The CIDG chief said that the names of the others accused are being withheld yet as operation against them continues.

Eleazar added that the arrest of Paraiso may be considered as “a great setback of the NPA movement.” — Rene U. Borromeo/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
