2 dead, 8 hurt as PUJ loses brakes

-

CEBU - Two persons were killed while eight others were injured when a passenger jeepney lost its brakes and rammed a bakery in sitio Maracas, barangay Lahug, past 8 p.m. Sunday.

Traffic investigator Edgardo Becoy identified the fatalities as Bernard Delicos, 27, married, and an unidentified old woman who is still at the morgue of Perpetual Soccour Hospital.

Those who were injured and were brought to different hospitals in Cebu City were Francisco Gungob, 30; his 11-month-old son Keneth John; Crispin Pasague, 52; Renelyn Cadalena, 20; Lolita Pasague, 51; Aileen Academia, 28; the jeepney driver Joel Trangia, 44; and his wife Enrica, 54.

Because the driver only sustained minor injuries he was detained by the traffic authorities and charges for double homicide and multiple physical injuries through reckless imprudence will be filed against him.

Trangia told the traffic investigators that while he was negotiating his 17C jeepney with plate number GVV 689 downhill from barangay Busay heading toward JY Square in Salinas Drive the brakes of his jeepney malfunctioned.

Three Angels bakeshop owner Marge Mendez said her shop was destroyed when it was hit by the vehicle that also caused injuries to the other victims who were in a nearby videoke house.

“Kadtong tiguwang nga namatay nga wala pa gani mailhi, naglakaw kuno to sa daplin sa karsada dihang kalit lang nadam-agan sa jeepney,” the bakery owner said.

A motorcycle that was parked near the bakery was also damaged. Mendez said he will ask payment from Trangia for her repairs. — Rene U. Borromeo/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
