Shredders seen to reduce Mandaue garbage by 20%

-

CEBU – Mandaue City expects to meet its target of reducing the volume of its garbage by at least 20 percent before the yearend.

This after Mayor Jonas Cortes distributed nine shredding machines to 27 barangays in the said city last Friday.

These 27 barangays were divided into nine clusters to facilitate sharing of the nine shredders which costs P62,000 each. These machines have the capacity of quickly reducing a variety of bulk solids making composting easy.

Having their own shredders, barangays Canduman, Labogon, Subangdaku and Casili are actively implementing the solid waste management program of the city.

Labogon barangay captain Damaso Tumulak said that after they implemented the solid waste management plan, the daily volume of garbage in their barangay was reduced to about half. Also, he mentioned of the establishment of a Materials Recovery Facility in his barangay and on their efforts in composting.

Organic fertilizer from plain composting will render an income of P50 per kilo and P500 per kilo with the application of vermiculture, or the use of African night crawlers, a variety of earthworm.

Composting can be completed in two weeks time.

Cortes has been advocating for the proper disposal of waste and the recycling of garbage.

Meanwhile, Canduman barangay captain Leo Jabas reported of a reduction in the garbage being collected in his barangay. He added that before they used to field five dump trucks daily to collect garbage, now they can do it with just two dump trucks.

The same things are being reported in Subangdaku and Casili.

Records from the Department of General Services showed that the city’s daily volume of garbage is about 200 tons, serviced by nine compactor trucks, two dump trucks for the city proper, and at least one dump truck for each barangay. — Jose P. Sollano with PR/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
