3 NPA surrenderees get cash aid from province

-

CEBU - At least three National People’s Army supporters and members who surrendered to the 78th Infantry Battalion received a cash grant yesterday from Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia as part of the province’s all-out war against the insurgency.

Jovenal Lato, alias “Ka Jury” of Danao City who was recruited by the communist front last December 2000, said that he will be using the amount to put up his own business. He surrendered last September 17 and turned over his rebel-issued .30 cal. Springfield rifle.

Jonas Bueno, or “Ka Dodong” also of Danao City, is an NPA reserve of the then Front Committee, Central Visayas Regional Party Committee. He surrendered to the 78th IB last September 17.

Bueno said that he plans to buy poultry for his family to start anew. The last surrenderee is Martiniano Olivo, alias “Ka Bryan” of Dalaguete town. He was recruited by the front in 1987 and surrendered before the 78th IB on October 23 with his Frontier revolver.

The 78th IB’s Balik-Baril Program is aimed at enticing rebels to return to the fold of the law, offering cash in exchange for guns surrendered.

Cebu third district Rep. Pablo John Garcia said the low state of morale prevailing in the organization is the main reason many of them surrender or become inactive. — Jasmin R. Uy/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
