Sen. Aquino tells youth: Prioritize dev't programs

CEBU - Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III yesterday challenged Sangguniang Kabataan members to prioritize development in their areas for the benefit of all.

Speaking during the opening of the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation National Congress at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, Aquino said he observed that youths in different barangays focus only on sponsoring activities such as benefit dances.

Aquino said there is a need for the youths and the SK leadership to introduce changes at the barangay level.

He said that instead of using government funds for benefit dances, the Sangguniang Kabataan should spearhead a forum involving different sectors. He stressed that the youths should also know how to secure funds to finance projects in their respected barangays, adding that they should also establish good relations with other government offices.

Aquino discouraged the SK from concentrating on activities that only benefit the few.

SK national president Jane Censoria Cajes, for her part, admitted that Aquino’s statement is a big challenge to them.

She said the youths should not only take issues involving the youths but should also be aware of the concerns of the majority of people. — Jose P. Sollano/LPM (THE FREEMAN)
