Carillo: Day care centers should be accessible to kids

CEBU - Cebu City Councilor Gerardo Carillo wants the barangay Day Care Centers be put up in areas where most of the residents are staying to make them more accessible to the children.

Carillo, chairman of the City Councils committee on education, has observed that some of the day care centers are located near the barangay halls but most of the residents are living far away.

“Mga bata god na. Luoy kaayo ang mga bata nga maglakaw pa’g layo kay ang mga tinun-an sa day care centers nag-edad og duha ngadto sa lima ka tuig,” Carillo explained.

Carillo even encouraged the barangay officials to adopt a so-called “home-based” style of learning centers where the barangay officials will identify a house or a structure near the place where children are concentrated and the city and barangays will be the ones to provide the teachers.

“Adto sila didto magklase aron ang mga bata dili na kinahanglang molakaw pa og layo para lang makatambong sa klase,” he added.

The day care center is a joint project of the city and the barangay aimed at preparing the children for their next educational level, the kindergarten.

Last Wednesday, the Cebu City Council passed the resolution of Councilor Eugenio “Jingjing” Faelnar that seeks to appropriate the amount of P480,985 for each of the six barangays for the construction of day care centers.

Earlier, Mayor Tomas Osmeña has approved close to P3 million budget for the project that should be taken from so-called Pagcor funds, or the city’s share of the operations of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation in Cebu City. —Rene U. Borromeo/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
