Program for students to engage in business

-

CEBU - Acting Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama supported the move of the United Multi-Sectoral Coordinating Council of Cebu City (UMC4) to encourage young students to engage in business.

Yesterday, the UMCA launched its so-called “D’Best Market,” a project that aims to help students start their business without the need of a capital.

The UMC4 is composed of members from various business stall owners and street traders in the city’s downtown area headed by Joni T. Chan.

A graduate in business administration, Chan said the UMC4’s intention is to make a difference in the community through uplifting the lives of others.

He said the students are encouraged to set up businesses that have social value, which could be the solution to the social problems in their community.

The students who are selected for the Business Entrepreneurial Scholarship and Training (BEST) program are given the opportunities to attend seminars, lectures and training in salesmanship and entrepreneurship.

Chan said there are 80 students from four public night high schools in the city who would become the first batch of beneficiaries. These students are from Regino Mercado, Gothong Memorial, Pasil and Bulacao Community Night High Schools.

After attending a series of seminars, the students would be allowed to start their own business by selling various products from the members of the UMC4 through the “angkat” system.

“Kon dili mahalin ang produkto nga ilang ibaligya, ila ra nga iuli ug ilisan na usab og lain. Ang ihatag namo kanila nga presyo barato kaayo nga matandi sa factory price unya sila na ang mopaganansya,” Chan explained.

Rama said this program helps the students to earn money for their needs. — Rene U. Borromeo/LPM (THE FREEMAN)
