DepEd asked: Inspect suspected dengue site

CEBU – The Cebu City Council asked the Department of Education (DepEd) to inspect the area behind the Mabolo Elementary School and to dump filling materials in that place to prevent water from being stagnant during heavy rains.

Mabolo barangay captain Rey Ompoc reported to the City Council that the back portion of the school, which is a low area, is always filled with water during heavy downpour, and that it will take to a few days for the water to drain.

Some councilors believed that the place might be a breeding site of mosquitoes that is why Mabolo is one of barangays in the city with high cases of dengue.

Mabolo is the third barangay in the city with the highest number of dengue cases, although it is much wider in area compared to other barangays of the city.

From January to September 20, there were 45 dengue cases in Mabolo with one death.

The total number of dengue casualties in Cebu City had already reached 40 with the death of two more victims, including a six-year-old child from barangay Tisa last week.

Ompoc said as one way to minimize the dengue cases, he ordered barangay workers to always clean the drainage system in their barangay, particularly those located in the remote places.

While dengue cases have gone down from July, the number of casualties is much higher this year compared to only 23 from January to September last year. — Rene U. Borromeo/LPM (THE FREEMAN)
