Malacañang assures stable prices of goods on X-mas

-

CEBU – Malacañang expressed confidence yesterday that stable consumer prices will prevail as the Christmas season approaches as well as the adequate supply of goods in demand during the holidays as the country’s economy improves.

Press Secretary Jesus Dureza also announced yesterday President Arroyo and Cabinet officials will start today an economic road show that will highlight the country’s economic strength and opportunities amid the global challenges.

“I think there will be easier times as we approach the Christmas season,” Dureza told radio dzRB program “Pilipinas! Pilipinas!”

He pointed out that increase in oil prices, which is the main source of our difficulties, have apparently stabilized. He, however, warned that movements of oil prices in the world market remain volatile and that “it can go up anytime.”

Dureza said the economic reforms of the Arroyo administration implemented two years ago have somewhat shielded the country from the global economic slowdown.

Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila said consumer prices “seem to soften and at the least, what we are expecting is that this should be sustained until the end of the year.”

Favila said manufacturers and suppliers have assured the government that there will be enough supply of goods and products in demand during the Christmas season, like chicken and canned fruits.

He said the DTI has forged partnerships with 17 manufacturing firms where many products are sold with discounts in selected outlets nationwide.

Dureza said Arroyo would kick off this week activities to highlight the country’s economic strength and encourage people and sectoral groups to contribute further to growth.

She will preside at noon today over the National Competitiveness Council meeting with leaders of the private sector at the Palace. — Philippine Star news service/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
