Cebuano ranks 3rd in med-tech exams

CEBU - A Cebuano ranked third in the recent Medical Technologist Licensure Examinations.

Gianpaolo Lepiten Cabanag, 21, of Cebu Doctors University is among the 877 of 1,329 examinees who passed the exams he described to be “very grueling”.

Gian scored 88.10 percent placing him on third spot nationwide, the only Cebuano who made a colorful finish in the said exams, as announced by the Professional Regulatory Commission with information furnished by Dr. Marietta Baccay, chairman of the Board of Medical Technology, and board members Ms. Marilyn Atienza and Ms. Marian Tantingco.

A God-fearing young man who made his way to scholastic excellence, Gian comes from a family of doctors and of the allied sciences. His father, Dr. Oliver Cabanag is a consultant of the Department of Pediatrics-Chong Hua Hospital. His mother is an administrator of the Cebu Roosevelt Memorial College in Bogo City. He is the youngest in the family, with three siblings.

It was also learned that his sister and brother are now in California working as registered nurses, and that his second sister is a doctor at the Medical Doctors-Camp Lapu-Lapu.

Gian’s values have been strongly molded at the Mandaue Christian School as a grader and at the St. Louise Mandaue City in high school. These values were strengthened all the more when he attended college at the CDU which has forged alliance with the sisters of St. Paul de Chartres where dictum is on the observance of total care that requires both temporal and spiritual attention. This has definitely shaped Gian’s humility and healthy disposition towards life.

“In every success, I believe God is with me. To experience God’s hand is overwhelming,” Gian said in a phone interview.

As a top performing student, Gian also experienced pressures coming from his mentors, friends and family. But instead of giving up, he opted to lift everything to God and make Him his inspiration to push even harder.

With the mindset that God has good plans for each one of us, Gian said that the formula he used is “good work plus prayer equals success”.

Emmalyn Cutamora, department chairperson of Medical Laboratory Science of CDU, says she already expected Gian to make it to the top as shown by his excellent academic background and good attitude.

Gian is now planning either to accept CDU’s offer to join its workforce, or to take up medicine proper under the influence of his father.
