Capitol grants scholarships to 56 students

Fifty-six deserving students who graduated from public high schools last year were granted scholarship by the Province of Cebu under its Cebu Tertiary Educational Assistance Program.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia personally handed the certificates to the scholars during the induction of the new set of officers of the CTEAP at the Capitol Social Hall last week.

Capitol consultant on mass and electronic media Jeanette Malinao said the scholars of the CTEAP can avail of free tuition and other miscellaneous fees in state colleges and universities like Cebu Normal University and Cebu State College of Science and Technology.

CTEAP was first implemented in 1993 during the administration of former governor Pablo Garcia and was revived two years ago through the request of Provincial Board member Juan Bolo, who heads the committee on education of the Board.

The 56 new scholars will join the 92 existing scholars of the province.

The scholars have to maintain an average grade of 2.5 and render a three-week community service during summer in a government office to do jobs related to their field of education. Scholars are also not allowed to shift courses and are encouraged to enroll in ladderized programs like education.

“The scholarship grant will be automatically revoked if the student is found to have committed misconduct or misdemeanor against school policies or to have violated the scholarship policies,” Bolo said.

In Liloan town, Mayor Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco signed an agreement with the Cebu State College of Science and Technology for the training of residents who are interested on computer technology and automotive technology.

Under the MOA, the objectives of the CSCST-Cite Main Campus is to expand and strengthen its linkages with the community for “the promotion of relevant and functional instruction, production, extension and meaningful research.”

Because of this, it is extending its programs, particularly in the area of skills training through the Extension of Technology Education for National Development (Extend) program of the College of Industrial Technology and Engineering (Cite) Extension Services.

With the agreement signed recently, Liloan residents will benefit from technical assistance and skills training to be conducted by the CSCST.

The training will cover on computer technology like computer literacy, inter-office automation and Internet connectivity, Computer-Aided Design, web development, graphics enhancement, PC troubleshooting and repair and basic networking.

The skills training on automotive technology will include preventive maintenance, general overhauling, under chassis and automotive wiring.

CSCST will provide the experts for the skills training, as well as prepare training design and course content specific to the trainees’ needs.

On the other hand, the Municipality of Liloan will provide training space and electric power requirements as well as other logistical needs. — Garry B. Lao/WAB
