No resolution yet on labor conflict

No agreement was reached in yesterday’s meeting between the Associated Labor Union-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines and the Taipan Development Corporation in relation to the termination of two employees of Gaisano Mactan.

Director Eduardo Mirasol of the National Conciliation and Mediation Board yesterday said he was disheartened with the outcome of the meeting because both parties merely expounded on their respective positions but failed to arrive at any resolution to the issue.

The second day of the ALU-TUCP-led strike at Gaisano Mactan the other day was suspended to give way to yesterday’s meeting, which was attended by ALU-TUCP spokesperson Josefina “Joy” Lim; Assistant to the Vice-President of Finance of Taipan Mariden Uy; and Taipan legal counsel Eduardo Reyes.

Mirasol said another meeting will be conducted only if the two parties can lay down possible resolutions to the issue, adding, that NCMB will do its best to settle the dispute.

Meanwhile, ALU-TUCP said they will resume the strike if the Department of Labor and Employment would fail to convince Taipan Development Corporation to reinstate the suspended workers.

Aside from the terminated personnel, three more were reportedly suspended while seven others were reportedly transferred to other branches of Gaisano.

Those terminated personnel were reportedly not granted termination fees because the audit that was conducted reportedly disclosed that several items went missing during the employees’ terms of service. — Niña Chrismae G. Sumacot/JMO
