Youths welcome Beijing Olympics with protest

-

On the start of the Beijing Olympics yesterday, 35 young members of progressive groups marched towards the Chinese Consular Office in Cebu and held a symbolic silent protest against China’s alleged human rights violations against its own people as well as the people of Burma (Myanmar) and Tibet.

Members of Akbayan Party and Movement for the Advancement of Student Power (MASP) wore surgical masks bearing the slogan “Stop Human Rights Violation to address the alleged filthiness of air in Beijing which reflects its government’s disregard to their citizens’ rights.”

They also carried mock Olympic torches and sports equipment, and set free 88 balloons during the rally to symbolize their demand for democracy and to stop human rights violations.

On the occasion of the international day of action for Tibet and Burma, the protesters believe that China is uniquely positioned to address Burma’s problems, and to facilitate democratic reforms and address human rights issues hounding its own people, especially in Tibet.

“Atong panawagan sa katawhan nga dili unta mabuta sa kanindot sa Beijing Olympics; instead makighiusa ta sa Burma ug Tibet to express their human rights,” said Ernie Edralin, Akbayan-Cebu spokesperson.

On August 8, 1988, young people in Burma launched massive nationwide rallies called the “8888 Uprising,” calling for an end to military rule and the establishment of a democratic government. But the military response was swift and brutal because they killed around 3,000 people, mostly students, and monks, and imprisoned thousands more.

With the situation in Burma and its regional impacts that have worsened since 1988, the militants urge the international community to unite with them and deny the Chinese regime the means to continue oppressing and killing civilians.

“Twenty years after the inspiring 8888 uprising, we stand in solidarity as a movement, more determined than ever, to achieve democracy and human rights in Burma. We join our voices with the people of Burma in the conviction that change is urgent and possible,” Akbayan said in a statement. — Niña Chrismae G. Sumacot/WAB
