Mariner’s Court to rise at port area
Philippine Seafarers’
During the groundbreaking and capsule-laying ceremony yesterday, lawyer German Pascua Jr., the national vice president of the PSU, said that the P120-million mariner’s court is a welfare center for seamen both here in the city and the nearby provinces.
Aside from becoming a training hub, the center would also be a home to the seafarers as well as to their families.
The mariner’s court will be a seven-floor structure. The rooftop will take the shape of the fore of a ship, while its floor area would measure 7,900 square meters.
The structure, according to the plan, will house 100 rooms for the trainees and their families. The dormitory-like rooms are set to accommodate 10 persons while the family-size rooms will have two to three persons. The length of stay of the trainees’ families is indefinite yet.
Dr. Raul Alcarez, national vice president for health services of the Associated Labor Unions, said that the mariner’s court is also open for transients in the city.
Sports equipment and amenities, gym and other welfare services would also be present in the center. A restaurant which Alcarez describes as “like that in a five-star hotel” will function in the mariner’s court.
Construction of the said building is expected to start in two to three months time and is expected to be finished after nine months to a year. — Cressida Paula G. Delmo/MEEV
