DepEd team to come up with disaster response measures
The Department of Education Disaster Management and Monitoring Group in Region-7 will convene next week to come up with specific measures to properly respond to disasters.

The first objective of the meeting is to come up with a detailed preparation that would enable schools to properly respond to emergencies and disasters.
This will include laying down strategies and action plans for disasters like reporting strategy, data gathering, monitoring and evaluation.
The group would also define responsibilities of its members and provide trainings on how to effectively “re-echo” advisories to the lower levels.
DepEd admits that officials, despite the drills conducted in schools for alarming situations such as earthquakes, fire and other emergencies, still reportedly lack contingency plans for actual circumstances.
DepEd has observed that calamities have damaged school infrastructure and even injured or killed students.
Meanwhile, Cebu Provincial Board Member Victor Maambong is supporting the call of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council for local government units to implement disaster preparedness at the barangay level.
RDCC earlier said there is a need to activate disaster preparedness in the barangays, especially that the country often experiences calamities such as typhoons.
Maambong is also supporting the more stringent guidelines implemented by the Philippine Coastguard regarding vessels sailing during bad weather conditions.
The more stringent rules were implemented in the wake of the sinking of M/V Princess of the Stars.
Under the new guidelines, vessels are not allowed to leave the port of origin when a storm signal number one is raised. Likewise, vessels already at sea when the signal is being raised are required to seek shelter instead of pursuing towards its destination.
