Typhoon victims in Bantayan get aid

More than 16,000 households in the towns in Bantayan Island that were affected by Typhoon Frank received relief goods from Cebu fourth district Rep. Benhur Salimbangon and the Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung Charitable Foundation, Inc. yesterday.

The beneficiaries were from 38 barangays of the three municipalities of Bantayan, Madridejos and Sta. Fe.

The MSY foundation led by its chairperson Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung and the board of directors have chosen the 16,000 households after they were identified by the Department of Social Welfare and Development as the ones that badly need assistance after the typhoon ravaged the island two weeks ago.

The relief goods include rice, sardines, noodles, milk, coffee, used clothing, blankets, mattresses, among others.

Around the island, majority of the over a hundred of poultry houses were also badly damaged by the typhoon. The Cebu provincial government estimated the damage at around P336 million wherein millions of chicken died.  Several homes were also totally damaged while crops and trees were uprooted.

In Bantayan town alone, it was reported that the damage to poultry is worth P215 million, excluding the damages to agriculture and infrastructure.

Madridejos town reported P121 million worth of damage to infrastructure, agriculture, government properties and poultry farms.

Sta. Fe reported that over 3,000 families in the town were affected by the calamity.

Madridejos Mayor Salvador dela Fuente, Bantayan Mayor Genalyn Escario-Canares and Sta. Fe Mayor Jennifer Ilustrisimo, together with the MSY board of directors and Rep. Salimbangon, toured the 14 barangays in Madredijos, 20 barangays in Bantayan and six barangays in Sta. Fe, respectively as they distributed the relief goods.

During the distribution, Rep. Salimbangon announced that all the residents will be enrolled in his health program dubbed as “Benhur Health Card,” which entitles them to avail themselves of hospitalization assistance amounting to P3,000 to P10,000 at the government-accredited hospitals.

He said that he allocated P8 million from his pork barrel fund to finance the said program. —Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/WAB
