Aussie gov’t shows interest in Arrogante slay

-

The Australian Government has assured the family of businessman Renerio “Gogong” Arrogante, who was killed in Daanbantayan town last March 9, of its keen interest on the case.

Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Stephen Smith informed members of the Arrogante family, who are now based in Australia through Member of Parliament Daryl Melharm, that the Australian Embassy in Manila is taking a close interest in the case.

Smith said that embassy consular staff are providing assistance to Julieta Arrogante, widow of Renerio, and have spoken to the local police on her behalf.

He further said that the Australian Embassy in Manila has also written to the National Bureau of Investigation to demonstrate the government’s interest in the case and to seek an update.

The embassy will continue to follow the investigation and will monitor the trial of the case and those accused of killing Arrogante, Smith stressed.

Renerio held dual citizenship as he also lived for some time in Australia before returning to Daanbantayan to engage in business.

Rosa Alaso, a sister of Renerio who is now in Australia, was the one who sought the assistance of the Australian government about the case.

Alaso informed Australian officials of their fears that political corruption in the Philippines will prevent a fair investigation and trial of the case.

The family is now also in the process of gathering signatures to request that the trial of the case be held in Manila to prevent Cebu officials from interfering.

The family of the murder victim has once again expressed disappointment on the failure of the officials of Daanbantayan to act on the case.

They further complained of the alleged effort that has been exerted to defend the prime suspect of the case – Army Sgt. Moises Ludoc, who was arrested by the NBI.
