Cancer cases found higher in Cebu south

A higher rate of cancer cases is being recorded in the southern part of Cebu by a study conducted by the Aboitiz Cancer Center.

The study - which focused on the towns of Minglanilla and San Fernando and the city of Naga for the south and was compared to the one on Consolacion, Lilo-an, and Compostela towns in the north - showed a continued increase in the morbidity and mortality rates of both male and female cancer patients.

More males were observed to have succumbed to the disease.

The morbidity rate in the south in 2010 is expected to be at 106.09 for males and 84.65 for females, while its mortality rate is expected to be at 88.09 for males and 66.26 for females.

The morbidity rate for the north was noted to be a lot lesser at 81.45 for males and 53.97 for females. Its mortality rate is 52.44 for males and 29.78 for females.

Cancer cases include liver, lung, breast, colorectal, cervical, blood, thyroid, prostate, lymph nodes and stomach.

The Aboitiz Cancer Center is set to delve into why the south has higher cases of cancer.  - Rizzi Ann C. Cerera, UP Tacloban Comm Arts intern/MEEV
