Rains cause collapse of subdivision’s wall

-

Heavy rains caused an outer wall of a subdivision in barangay Lahug to collapse the other night, but no one was hurt in the incident.

Lahug barangay councilman Covito Taborada Jr. said the retaining wall of the subdivision located along the Salinas Drive Ext. collapsed after heavy rains weakened the soil near its base.

Taborada said a length of at least fifteen to twenty meters of the wall fell on the road totally blocking it.

Taborada, who is also the chairman of committee on public works and highways and general services of barangay Lahug, immediately rushed to the scene and assessed the damage.

He called the contractor of the subdivision to repair the damage as residents in the lower area, specifically from BC Homes, were afraid that if bad weather continues a much bigger disaster could happen.

“Kanang ilang paril sa inabuno nga yuta nibigay na tungod siguro sa tubig nga napundo sa pagbunok sa ulan,” Taborada said.

The wall collapsed on two parked cars, a Kia and a Volkswagen.

The president of the BC Homeowners Association Melodina Sual said the contractors must make the walls stronger.

“Ang amo ani nga ayuhon nila ang ilang retaining wall, kay kuyaw man ni nga mahugmak ning uban dinhi sa ubos,” said Sual, referring to what is left of the standing wall that looks to them like it might fall any moment.  Edwin Ian Melecio/BRP
