DENR releases today results of probe on coal ash dumping

-

Environment and Natural Resources regional executive director Leonardo Sibbaluca is set to release today the results of its investigation over allegations of coal ash dumping by the Toledo Power Corporation in Toledo City.

Sibbaluca, who just got back from a month’s travel abroad, yesterday assured Rep. Pablo John Garcia (Cebu, Third District) that he will release today the results of the investigation, which was conducted by a team tasked by Environmental Management Bureau regional technical director Allan Arranquez.

“Rest assured our agency had already taken action on the request of Congressman Garcia on the alleged coal ash dumping in Toledo City,” Sibbaluca said during a dialogue at the Malacañang sa Sugbo yesterday.

Garcia earlier expressed concern over Toledo Power Corporation’s alleged dumping of coal ash at barangay Tubod in Toledo City, prompting him to verify some matters with the DENR.

The congressman wanted to know from the DENR if an Environmental Compliance Certificate was issued to Global Business Power Corporation, which has been managing Toledo Power.

Global Business, for its part, had assured Toledo City Mayor Arlene Zambo that it had the necessary environmental clearances from the EMB, which reportedly stated that the coal ash is not hazardous to the health of nearby residents.

Last March 19, the barangay council of Tubod approved a resolution requesting Mayor Zambo to check on the affected area.

The mayor, together with EMB personnel and city health officials, reportedly met with the residents yesterday and explained the plant’s activities in the barangay.

Zambo earlier confirmed that residents complained of alleged ill effects of the coal ash dumping and the possible destruction of the barangay road, but she said that all of these concerns have been addressed already.

Zambo added that power plant’s officials will also conduct a weekly medical checkup on the residents, and extend financial assistance to the affected residents. Toledo Power Corporation supplies 30 megawat power to the province.  Ferliza C. Contratista/RAE
