Habal-habal driver killed by two men in Balamban

-

A driver of a motorcycle-for-hire, while taking his passenger to Toledo City, was shot dead by two unidentified men on another motorcycle upon reaching barangay Gaas in Balamban Tuesday evening.

The Balamban police said the victim, 40-year-old Roman “Boy” Lozada, a resident of barangay Prensa in Balamban, had a pending case for alleged distribution of counterfeit P500 bills in the past.

The attackers overtake the motorcycle of Lozada and fired. Lozada was hit once and when he lost control of his motorcycle, he and his passenger, Domingo Abarquez, crashed into the ground. Abarquez, who was spared from the attack, quickly stood up and ran away for cover.

Abarquez told investigators that, while he was in hiding, he saw the attackers, wearing helmets, approached the wounded Lozada and fired more shots at the victim. Lozada died on the spot as the assailants fled from the scene.

Police gathered from the crime scene eleven shells of .45 caliber bullets and four P500 bills that they suspected to be counterfeits.

Case investigator, SPO2 Arvie Banate, said the police will bring the bills to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to be examined. He said that although the motive of the killing has yet to be determined, it had a semblance of the “vigilante slayings” that swept Cebu City the past years.

Banate, however, clarified that it was not yet certain if the shooting had something to do with his pending case but he mentioned that Lozada’s stepdaughter was arrested for using a fake P500 bill a month ago only to be freed when the complainant refused to file charges against her. — Edwin Ian Melecio/RAE
