“Shabu queen,” man fall in NBI operations

-

A 27-year-old pregnant woman branded as the “shabu queen” was arrested during a buy-bust operation conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation yesterday.

Amelina Vergara, of sitio San Roque, Mambaling, was arrested by the NBI operatives shortly before noon yesterday after she sold two big packs of shabu worth P40,000 to an NBI undercover agent.

Vergara’s arrest followed an earlier operation in barangay Tutay, Pinamungajan town where Ryan Norteza was also arrested for possession of illegal drugs.

Norteza, son of former Tutay barangay captain and now barangay councilman Alejandrito Norteza, was allegedly engaged in illegal drugs trade in the town.

NBI operatives swooped down on Norteza’s residence yesterday dawn based on the search warrant issued by Judge Cesar Estrera of Regional Trial Court Branch 29 in Toledo City for alleged violations of the Republic Act 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

The residence of another drug suspect, Romeo Bayking, was also raided by the NBI but he was able to elude arrest. But a pack of suspected shabu, a Cal. 22 pistol and several drug paraphernalia were seized from his residence.

The NBI also seized from Norteza a caliber 22 pistol with several live ammunitions, three packs of suspected shabu, drug paraphernalia, including a digital weighing scale, and P2,970 cash believed to be proceeds from his drugs trade.

Norteza’s arrest stemmed  from the request of Cebu third district Rep. Pablo John Garcia and Tutay barangay captain Ricardo Layar. Sources said Norteza has been enjoying protection of some unscrupulous local officials.

NBI regional director Medardo de Lemos said his operatives made a follow-up operation in the city after the raid in Pinamungajan that resulted to the arrest of Vergara. De Lemos said they were informed that Vergara was the shabu supplier of Norteza and Bayking.

A nine-month pregnant, Vergara denied selling illegal drugs and said she did not know where the drugs reportedly confiscated from her came from.

She was, however, found positive of the fluorescent powder used to mark the money in the buy-bust operation. — Fred P. Languido/LPM
