City cops asks Tomas for help in procuring bulletproof vests

-

The Cebu City Police Office, considered one of the best police units in the Philippine National Police- Central Visayas, only has four bulletproof vests.

This prompted City Police Director Senior Supt. Patrocinio Comendador to seek help from the city government for the purchase of additional safety gear.

In his letter addressed to Mayor Tomas Osmeña, Comendador expressed hope that the local government could help in procuring the much needed equipment of at least 10 bullet proof vests in order to ensure the safety of his police officers who will be responding to crimes.

The four bulletproof vests of the city police is now with the Special Weapons and Tactics but Comendador said the city police is still ready to respond to situations such as robberies and hostage situations.

He, however, said that it would be better for his men to have the protective gear when responding to such crimes and cited recent police operations that resulted to the deaths or injuries among city policemen.

The problem on the lack of protective gear resurfaced after PO1 Noriel Luage of the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau died while serving a search warrant for Ramon “Boy” Baclohan in sitio Sab-a, barangay Zapatera last December 10.

Luage died just hours after he received an award at the Police Regional Office for his role in the capture of a wanted man.

The problem was again stressed when SWAT operatives SPO2 Renante Nioda and PO3 Reynaldo Callet were injured while responding to an armed person alarm last December 25 in barangay Inayawan.

Callet was wounded when the slug that came from the Magnum .357 revolver of Alejandro Bayarcal grazed the policeman’s abdomen. He was not wearing a vest. Nioda, on the other hand, was wearing a vest, but a slug hit both his arms.

Police Regional Office Director Ronald Roderos said he might request Camp Crame to provide the CCPO with enough vests and Kevlar helmets but said that these will not be immediately available. — Garry B. Lao/QSB
