CNU to confer honorary degree on Gov. Garcia

-

The Cebu Normal University has announced its board of regents’ decision to confer the honoris causa, doctor of humanities degree on Governor Gwendolyn Garcia.

Dr. Ester B. Velasquez, in a letter congratulating the governor, said that the CNU board cited Garcia’s “extraordinary contribution” to the Cebuanos through her acts of social responsibility.

“Your humane intentions have become so renowned that the local board (approved) of the recommendation,” the letter reads.

Velasquez added that she and Commission on Higher Education commissioner Nona Ricafort have always believed Garcia is a Cebuano worth emulating for, giving the CNU more reason to honor the governor with the appropriate degree.

Members of the board of regents are Dr. Araceli Almase, regional director Marlene Rodriguez of the National Economic Development Board, Superintendent Recaredo Borgonia of the Department of Education-Cebu province, CNU Faculty Association president Dr. Aurora Joaquino, and student government leader Cristine Duran.

Garcia, now on her second consecutive term, is the first female governor in Cebu’s 437 years existence as a province.

In her first term, Garcia established the 12-point agenda of her administration, including economically viable development programs aimed at responding to the Cebuanos’ needs in infrastructure, water, power, health, education, agriculture and food production, women, business, tourism, and environment.

Garcia also set a counterpart scheme with local government units in enrolling at PhilHealth over 80,000 indigent families, a development that was cited as the biggest enrollment in PhilHealth history.

Last September, Garcia was elected chairman of both the Regional Development Council, and the Regional Peace and Order Council, making her the first woman to sit in those positions.

The governor is also the deputy secretary-general of the League of Provinces of the Philippines-Visayas chapter, chairman of the Mactan Cebu Bridge Management Board, and member of the board of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority.   — Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/RAE
