DepEd plans to hire 10T teachers in ‘08
Some 10,400 more teachers will be hired next year to further improve the teacher-student ratio.
Department of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said that providing enough teachers, classrooms and textbooks remains the department’s top priority.
In
DepEd has earmarked some P24.3 billion for the hiring of new teachers, purchase of textbooks and construction of classrooms from 2006 to 2008.
Mordeno disclosed about 500 new teachers were hired by DepEd to teach in the public elementary schools last year.
This year, about the same number of new teachers were hired to fill up the items vacated through retirement and promotions as well as new item positions, he said.
He added that by January next year, they will again be accepting applications for the hiring of new teachers.
The DepEd has allocated P2.1 billion for this year alone for hiring of new 16,390 teachers.
Besides earmarking a substantial amount for teacher hiring, DepEd also augmented allocation for the construction of school buildings from P3 billion in 2006 to P5.4 billion in 2007, Lapus said, adding that “its proposed budget for 2008 was raised to P5.8 billion that is expected to produce 10,472 more classrooms.”
He said that the allocation of P5.4 billion was used for the construction of 6,132 classrooms and the repair of 12,400 other classrooms, particularly those damaged by the last typhoon.
