Cops seize firecrackers, gun replicas in Ermita

-

Police confiscated over P10,000 worth of firecrackers and gun replicas, most of them imported, sold on the sidewalks of Calderon Street in barangay Ermita Monday afternoon.

Sr. Insp. George Ylanan told The Freeman that the operation was in view of the calls of the Police Coordinating and Advisory Council for a drive against firecrackers and gun replicas sold in the city.

No arrests have been made during the operation because the stall owners quickly fled upon seeing the police.

Ylanan said imported firecrackers, such as those from China and Taiwan, are considered illegal according to the law because they are cheap and could kill the local industry.

On the other hand, selling gun replicas is considered illegal in the city since some criminals are using them in their nefarious activities, Ylanan said.

Ylanan said there were robbery incidents in which the perpetrators used only gun replicas. Those confiscated toy guns looked like 12-gauge shotguns, Scorpion Submachine pistols, .45 caliber pistols and other guns.

Ylanan said there was an unconfirmed report that the two men who robbed Monday evening the Red Tag Printing Press, which is owned by former Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas-Cebu Chapter head Brian Madronero, along Archbishop Reyes Avenue used toy guns.

This is because one of the employees noticed that one of the “pistols” does not have a magazine. When it was pointed at them, they noticed that the muzzle hole seemed to be much smaller than that of a real gun.

But out of fear, they dared not fight the robbers, who carted away two laptops worth P100,000 each and immediately fled onboard a motorcycle towards barangay Talamban.

Meanwhile, although the Commission on Elections gun ban was officially lifted yesterday, police said they would not stop going after illegally owned firearms.

Police visibility and checkpoints would still be conducted in various areas in the city as part of the intensified campaign against criminals who might take advantage during the celebration of the Yuletide Season. — Edwin Ian Melecio/LPM
