Fratman stabbed then shot to death in Liloan

-

A 19-year-old member of Tau Gamma Phi was stabbed and shot to death in sitio Bakante in barangay Tayud, Liloan yesterday dawn.

The victim, Lyndon Cañete, was with his 23-year-old cousin Jason Cañete after attending a disco at a fiesta in a nearby sitio. They were on their way home and were almost near Lyndon’s house when three young men waylaid and attacked Lyndon.

One of the three men stabbed Lyndon once near his abdomen and the other shot Lyndon twice. The three then quickly fled the scene.

Liloan Police Station investigator, SPO1 Dennis Malinao, said the wounded Lyndon and his cousin Jason were still able to ask for help from their uncle who, in turn sought police assistance.

Malinao said Jason was unharmed because he was steps behind Lyndon when the latter was attacked. Jason ran away then and only returned to Lyndon after the attackers fled.

Relatives immediately took Lyndon to a hospital but physicians declared him dead on arrival. He had a gunshot wound in his right foot but the fatal shot was the one on his right chest.

Malinao said that initial investigation showed the attack might be fraternity-related because, the night during the disco, Lyndon got into a fistfight with some members of Alpha Kappa Rho—an incident that was recorded and set to be tackled today at Tayud barangay hall.

Meanwhile, another fraternity-related incident took place at barangay Pitogo in Consolacion Saturday dawn when an Akrho member was stabbed and wounded while he and his friends were dancing at a disco there.

The victim was 20-year-old Orlando Evangelista, a resident of the town’s barangay Lamac, but the police have yet to identify the attacker.

PO2 Ruben Alin of the Consolacion Police Station said the victim’s friends failed to react on time because they only learned about the stabbing when they saw Evangelista bloodied.

The victim’s friends could not identify the attacker because the lights in the disco were dim and that the area was open for the attacker to escape unnoticed. Police are still investigating the case.  — Flor Z. Perolina/RAE
