Homicide investigators identified the fatality as Miguel Aguilella, 66, a resident of sitio Mayupay, barangay Quiot-Pardo, who was declared dead on arrival at the
PO2 Geoffrey Gutual of the Homicide Section of Cebu City Police Office said, the victim was repairing the clutch and brakes of the said mini-truck with license plate number PJY-336 inside the Muffler House Autoshop owned by a certain Mercedita Bejar when the incident happened.
Aguilella was lying on his back near the under the truck when he asked welder Benjamin Orillano, 53, of sitio Little Baguio, barangay Mambaling, to start the engine.
But as Orillano started the engine, he failed to make sure that the transmission was in neutral mode, prompting the vehicle to accelerate and run over the victim who was still under it.
Orillano claimed he called on Aguilella to get out from under the vehicle before he started the engine but the victim reportedly did not respond.
The two daughters of the victim told Gutual their father may have failed to hear the calls of Orillano because he was already partially deaf due to his age.
“Ang clutch ug brake giayo niya pagkahuman giingnan kuno ni papa nga i-start ang sakyanan kay suwayan. Nya niingon kuno tong nag-start sa sakyanan nga ‘tabi sa diha kay atong i-start’ pero wala tingali to kadungog si papa kay bungol-bungolon naman,” one of them said.
Witnesses said, Orillano even laughed when he felt the vehicle the tires hit something and was surprised to see the victim already unconscious.
The two alleged that their father once told them that he got into a heated argument with another mechanic in the said shop few days ago and wanted the police to investigate the case.
Orillano is now temporarily detained at the Traffic Group pending the filing of charges tomorrow. — Edwin Ian Melecio/BRP
