PNP director aghast by video footages on Liddawa incident

-

Philippine National Police director general Avelino Razon yesterday said he was aghast upon seeing the video footages showing Senior Inspector Jose Liddawa engage in a squabble with the ABS-CBN crew during a traffic accident in the dawn of September 17.

During yesterday’s turnover of the Police Regional Office-7 directorship, Razon said it is good that new regional police director Ronald Roderos has already taken action of the case.

He also said that it is expected that the media will always be the PNP’s partner in mirroring the abuses and defects of some policemen.

“Kayo ang magpapakita kong ano ‘yung mali’ng nagawa namin,” Razon said However, he also urged the media to come out with the whole truth in presenting the story.

Last Tuesday, the ABS CBN management dismissed the services of reporter Ramil Paican, cameraman Joel Noel and driver Samuel Trangia for dishonesty.

The giant television network said the three were found to have violated its code of conduct and ethics.

The termination came after the result of its internal investigation showed that Paican and his companions omitted some facts in the report they aired last September 28.

Their news report, which was even aired nationwide, showed that Liddawa and the TV crew got out of their vehicles after Liddawa’s car collided with the network’s crew cab. The collision happened after Liddawa, who was apparently drunk during that time, drove along a wrong lane.

During their heated argument, Liddawa then punched Noel and confronted Paican, yelling at them that he is a policeman.

The report said Liddawa fell into the ground and lost consciousness because he was drunk and that the ABS-CBN crew brought him to the hospital. However, the report failed to show that the television crew also hit the police officer.

But a week after the incident, ABS-CBN aired a long footage of the incident after Liddawa’s lawyer, Noel Archival, demanded for the unedited footages since his claimed that his client was first beaten up and was only defending himself.

However, in its longer footages, it showed that Liddawa threw the first punch at Noel who did not fight back. It was when he punched Noel again that Paican and Trangia began hitting Liddawa, which caused him to fall into the ground and lost his consciousness.

Meanwhile, the Cebu Federation of Beat Journalists passed a resolution describing the termination of Paican, Noel and Trangia as too harsh and urged the ABS-CBN management to reconsider. Listeners of dyAB and viewers of ABS-CBN are also launching a pro-Paican signature campaign.

The ABS-CBN management said these manifestations will be taken into consideration in the appeal filed by Paican and the labor union at the network. — Flor Z. Perolina/LPM
