UV bests other maritime schools in National Maritime Week events

The University of the Visayas bested other maritime schools in the region in various competitions held from September 17 to 23 in observance of the National Maritime Week. 

UV Maritime students Hannah Escosura and Paul Bryant Pimentel won the grand prize in this year’s Quiz Bowl. The duo went home with plaques and cash prizes.

The tandem of Kenneth Vincent Villoria and Nigel Kristian Serida of the University of Cebu-Maritime Education Training Center placed first runner-up in the Deck Division contest.

Joseph Adolfo and Chester Joseph Mansueto of UV also bested other schools in the Engine Division of the quiz bee. The two together with runners-up Gerard Comahig and Joseph Caputol of the Cebu State College of Science and Technology-Carmen campus received plaques and cash prizes.

Escosura also copped the Cadet of the Year Award in the Deck Level. She was followed by Gino Silva of Cristal E-College in Panglao Island, Bohol.

In the Engine Division, Simplicio Dampar, Jr. of Cristal E-College emerged as grand champion with UV’s Joseph Adolfo as first runner-up.

Meanwhile, Sulpicio Lines scored twice when M/V Princess of the Stars was chosen as the cleanest ship in Category A or ships with gross tonnages of from 300 to 5001; and M/V Princess of the Earth emerged cleanest in Category B or ships with gross tonnages of from 301 to 5000.

Cokaliong Shipping also earned double laurels for its cap when M/V Filipinas Cebu was chosen as the cleanest ship for Category C (ships with gross tonnages of from 1001 to 3000), and M/V Filipinas Dumaguete, for four years in a row, made it as the cleanest ship in Category D (ships with gross tonnages of from 1000 to 5001).

M/V Lite Ferry of Lite Shipping was hailed as cleanest in Category E (ships with gross tonnages of from 250 to 500).

The Maritime Industry Authority spearheaded the activities for the National Maritime Week in cooperation with a number of government agencies, industry and welfare bodies.

The National Maritime Week was instituted in 1996 by former President Fidel Ramos in recognition of the vital roles Filipino seafarers play in the development of the Philippines as a maritime country. — Jasmin R. Uy/MEEV
