A 43-year-old man went berserk, wounded his 71-year-old mother then was wounded himself when his own gun fired while having a scuffle with a responding tanod at barangay Calape in Daanbantayan Friday afternoon.
Police reports reaching The Freeman stated that Leonardo Yurag, a resident of the same barangay, went mad while quarreling with his 71-year-old mother Narcisa over corn seedlings.
Town policeman PO1 Tommy Tan said that Narcisa scolded then commanded Leonardo never to touch the seedlings because he has nothing to do with them.
Leonardo, however, got angry then slashed her right hand with a bolo, prompting the old woman to shout for help.
Chief tanod Bonifacio Beran came to subdue Leonardo but the latter attacked by stabbing the tanod instead. Leonardo missed and Beran ably disarmed Leonardo of the bolo.
Leonardo, however, took out from his waist a .38 caliber revolver but Beran quickly hold the attacker’s hand and tried to take away the gun. In the ensuing scuffle, the gun accidentally fired and hit Leonardo in the left leg.
The tanod immediately reported the incident to Calape barangay captain Cesar Pitogo then turned over the bolo and the gun, loaded with four bullets, which he seized from Leonardo.
Narcisa’s wound in her hand was treated at home by her neighbors while Leonardo was taken to the Daanbantayan District Hospital and later detained at the Daanbantayan Police station pending the filing of charges against him. — Flor Z. Perolina/RAE
