RP marine habitat: Most threatened in the world

-

The Philippine Sea which is considered the center of marine biodiversity is facing a crisis similar to the Amazon rainforest, says a marine biologist.

Dr. Kent Carpenter, who serves as coordinator of the Global Marine Species Assessment, said that the Philippine marine habitat is the most threatened habitat in the world.

Carpenter, in a forum entitled “Save Our Seas” held at the University of the Philippines, said that the distribution data for 2,983 species “reveal a pattern of richness under Philippine seas.”

He added that in their study, the Philippines shows an overabundance of both widespread Indo-Pacific marine species as well as species found in coral reefs. However, he said that this richness has been threatened already due to illegal fishing, and other illegal activities.

“Addressing this concern should be treated as a priority, as this is the only country with the most number of marine species indicating the richness of its marine resources,” Carpenter said.

The forum was attended by several environment groups and students of the University of the Philippines.

The forum aims to develop understanding and appreciation of the Philippine marine ecosystem, relevant laws and issues, and pave the way for the development of a multi-sectoral plan that would help protect the seas surrounding Cebu. — Jasmin R. Uy/MEEV
