Man kills mother-in-law over electric bills spat
After arguing over the sharing of electric bill payment, a man stabbed dead his 47-year-old mother-in-law inside her house at
Homicide investigator PO3 Henry Orbiso said the victim was Elvira Velayo while the suspected killer was Lani Mendez, who lives with the victim’s daughter at the back of the victim’s house.
Orbiso said that Mendez, who has been working as sales coordinator for a certain company, has been in constant bickering with Velayo over some family matters.
That fateful Thursday, Velayo was overheard by neighbors shouting at Mendez for share in the payment of electric bills and other debts.
Velayo was reportedly shouting: “Sige lang mo’g paugat, wala moy bayad-bayad sa utang!” This could have angered Mendez and triggered him to attack his mother-in-law with a pen knife.

The suspect, now in custody of the police, told The Freeman that he could not take anymore the insults from his mother-in-law. It was when she called him ‘buang’ that made him “lost his senses” and drove him to kill her.
He said Velayo had been treating him that way since Wednesday. “Diha na napawong ang akong panan-aw nga iya kong gitawag og buang,” Mendez said.
