A rookie policeman was shot and wounded for guiding a team of Mambaling policeman to a drug suspect at the interior part of sitio Plastikan in barangay Duljo-Fatima the other night.
The 27-year-old PO1 Elyser Zapico Cañete was hit in his right foot and is now out of danger after treated at the Cebu City Medical Center.
Homicide investigator PO3 Roger Nedamo said the attack against Cañete could be a reprisal against the latter who earlier tipped off the Mambaling Police about the drug operation of a certain Roco in the area.
Cañete is a resident of barangay Punta Princesa and has been assigned to the Regional Mobile Group but he guided the Mambaling miscellaneous team, led by SPO1 Joseph Toring, to the place of Roco.
Other policemen with the team were SPO1 Rene Sebes, PO3 Paul John Bacalso, and PO2 Dominador Manosorat.
The suspect however was not there but there some unidentified men fired three successive shots at the team. Shortly after the attackers disappeared, Cañete got a numbing feeling in his right foot and saw blood from a gunshot wound.
"Wala ni siya (Cañete) madistino diri. Igo lang gyud ni tawon nihatag og tip diri sa akong mga kauban, luwas naman hinuon siya," SPO1 Daniel Tarucan of Mambaling Police said. - Edwin Ian Melecio/RAE
