Voter's Education

Election is a process involving our right to choose, from among the candidates, our representatives in government, who will speak for us and defend our interests.

Who can vote? A qualified voter is a Filipino citizen, at least 18 years old on the day of the elections, and is registered with the Commission on Elections.

Voters have the right to choose who they want to sit in public office but then only those voters, whose names are in the voters' list, are allowed to vote.

On election day: The voting period is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and voters are required to go to their respective precincts in places designated by the Comelec to cast their votes once within the period.

The precinct chairman will check the list to see if your name is on the Book of Voters. If your name is listed, you will be given a ballot for you to fill up at the designated voting area, while using the ballot secrecy folder, with the names of your chosen candidate or candidates for a particular office.

After filling up the ballot, you fold the ballot once, return to the precinct chairman who in turn will tear off the ballot's stub. The ballot is then returned to you for you to drop into the ballot box.

The precinct chairman then dab your fingernail with an indelible ink as proof that you have already voted in the precinct.

Who are to be elected? This year's May 14 election is for the positions of Senators, District or partylist Representatives of the House, Governors and Vice-Governors, Provincial Board Members, City or Municipal mayors and vice-mayors and councilors. - Rene U. Borromeo
