February 5, 2007 | 12:00am
Bukidnon Rep. Juan Miguel Zubiri is in Cebu today to visit at least six schools as part of his information campaign on the newly-approved Republic Act 9367, otherwise known as the 2006 Biofuels Act, of which he is the principal author.
Among the schools in Cebu that Zubiri is scheduled to visit are the Indiana Aerospace University, University of Cebu in Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue Campus, University of the Philippines, Southwestern University, University of San Jose-Recoletos and the University of San Carlos.
He is also slated to interact with the various student organizations in these schools as part of his drive to promote the 2006 Biofuels Act.
President Gloria Arroyo signed the 2006 Biofuels Act into law just before she attended the East Asia Summit in Cebu last January 15, wherein 16 leaders of countries in the Pacific signed the Cebu Declaration on East Asian Energy Security.
The Biofuels Act supports the development and use of other biofuels to help mitigate toxic greenhouse gas emissions, provide indigenous renewable energy sources to reduce dependence on imported fuel, and increase rural employment and income.
Under RA 9367, the Department of Energy is tasked to gradually phase out the use of harmful gasoline additives and oxygenates which have been found to be hazardous to health and the environment. - Gregg M. Rubio
