Drop in firecracker-related injuries this Christmas noticed

-
Cases of firecracker-related injuries have dramatically decreased this Christmas compared to the figures from the previous year, according to the Department of Health.

Data from the DOH-Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the DOH stated that there were only 36 patients admitted for accidental firecracker explosion throughout the region. The victims were mostly from Cebu City.

The figure presented a dramatic decline of firecracker related injuries in Central Visayas compared to the 179 patients recorded in 2005.

No life-threatening conditions were monitored.

Though the figure is low on Christmas, RESU sentinel nurse Reynan Cimafranca warned that cases might go up on New Year's eve celebration.

"History has shown that firecracker explosion cases are high on New Year's Eve, so we are not complacent about it," Cimafranca said.

He added that the decline in the number of accidental pyrotechnic explosions could be attributed to the government's strengthened campaign against the use of highly explosive firecrackers.

Statistics on injuries caused by firecrackers led to the DOH campaign dubbed "FOUR-mula Kontra Paputok," which is about four most important points to remember during Christmas season. These are to use musical instruments, such as horns and drums in Christmas and New Year revelries, instead of firecrackers.

If one figures in an accident, clean the wound with soap and water to prevent infection. Then bring the person to the nearest hospital or health center. Third is to never pick up firecrackers that have not blown up. And fourth is to never ever fire guns.

This is the second year of the observance of the "FOUR-mula" drive which was initiated by Health Secretary Francisco Duque. The "Iwas Paputok" campaign officially started last December 4, but Cimafranca said that they only gave away the DOH campaign materials yesterday.

The materials include videos and posters on the "FOUR-mula" campaign. Said materials will be distributed to health centers all over the province and region. - Jasmin R. Uy
