PB to approve move urging probe vs 'kotong' policemen

The Provincial Board is set to deliberate, and perhaps approve, today a proposed resolution urging the police force to conduct an investigation of policemen who are harassing and extorting money from foreigners.

The proposed measure, sponsored by Board Member Carmiano Kintanar, was filed after reports reached the provincial government about policemen harassing foreigners just to extort money.

Kintanar said these "kotong cops" violated the Philippine National Police's duty to serve and protect Filipinos and foreigners in the country for free and without any conditions. Those found guilty of violating this avowed duty should be punished, he said.

Kintanar added that police harassment and extortion activities, if left unchecked and gone to worse, will certainly discourage tourists and foreign investors from coming to the country-a situation that would adversely affect the economy.

Kintanar suggested that the PNP should conduct lectures and moral enrichment sessions for its personnel. - Flor Z. Perolina
