DepEd: Stick to English as medium of instruction

Department of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus ordered that the English language, being spoken universally, should remain as primary medium of classroom instruction in all public and private schools nationwide.

Also stated in the order is the increased time allotment in the use of English as medium of instruction adopted beginning in grade one.

As provided for in the past curriculum, English as a second language is used as medium of instruction in English, Math, Science and Health starting already in grade three.

"English language should be used as a primary medium of instruction in all public and private schools in the elementary and secondary levels including those established as laboratory and or experimental schools and vocational institutions," Lapus said.

He added that as primary medium of instruction, the percentage time allotment for learning areas conducted in the English language should not be less than 70 percent of the total time allotment for all learning areas in all levels. - Jasmin R. Uy/MEEV
