Mordeno opposes plan to move start of classes

Department of Education regional director Carolino Mordeno has opposed the plan of newly installed DepEd secretary Jesli Lapuz to transfer the start of school year from June to September next year.

Mordeno's statement came after he joined the turnover ceremony of the new DepEd secretary last week, during which Lapuz ordered regional directors to conduct survey of parents, teachers and other sectors on the plan to transfer the start of classes.

Mordeno said that he opposed the move because the heat can affect the physical conditions of students and teachers if classes will continue during summer.

He added that as what Cebu City School Superintendent Leonilo Oliva said, most classrooms in different schools in Central Visayas have low ceilings that some students and teachers might not stand the heat during summer.

Although no official order for the survey has been released, Mordeno said they would still abide by any memorandum regarding the study.
