Ex-NPA rebel gunned down

An alleged former member of the New People's Army who was hired as a caretaker of a lot in Danao City was killed by an unidentified man after attending the last night of the wake of his dead grandson last Tuesday evening.

Councilor Justino Gomez of barangay Santican, Danao City reported to the police station that the victim was a certain Valeriano Matos, 56, a farmer.

Matos and his wife, Condrada, were walking home from the wake when an unidentified man suddenly appeared and shot the victim in the back, killing him instantly.

SPO4 Jose Salingua Jr., chief investigator of Danao City Police Station said Matos was once arrested by elements of 78th Infantry Battalion of Philippine Army after he was found involved in rebel activities in the area and was jailed along with his son.

He said that prior to the incident, Matos was hired as the caretaker of the Lhuillier property in barangay Santican, Danao City. - Gregg M. Rubio
