March 30, 2006 | 12:00am
The continuing operations of the Balay Dangpanan Crisis Center for women and children in Lapu-Lapu City has the support of Provincial Board member Agnes Magpale following reports of the increasing number of cases of abuses, violence and exploitation involving women and children.
Magpale gave the assurance after a meeting with representatives from Venue for Initiative and Genuine Development Foundation, Inc.
She said the Balay Dangpanan crisis center in Lapu-Lapu City provides services for those coming from the neighboring city of Mandaue and the towns of Consolacion and Cordova.
Erlinda Parame, executive director of the foundation, said that though a number of women and children already received assistance from their office, they still need the support of local officials and national government agencies.
It was learned that the center started its operations two years ago with the support of Cebu 6th district Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz who provides financial assistance for the operation of the center with the help of provincial officials.
Under the set-up, the center provides temporary shelter to women, children and their families who have fallen victims to domestic violence, abuse and exploitation and help integrate them back to their families.
It also provides legal aid on top of crisis counseling and ensures therapy as necessary for clients in the center through activities that can help in their speedy recovery. - Jose P. Sollano
